Diver Sonar TSO 10
Why grope around in the dark?
In most waters, the visibility
leaves a lot to be desired, placing great limitations on a diver's field
of vision and limiting or even preventing underwater photography.
Only with the aid of sonar equipment - it's beams penetrate even the murkiest
of water - help is at hand.
The unique Diver Sonar TSO 10, designed and built be Honeywell-ELAC, "illuminates" the area around the diver, rather like a powerful flashlight.
This not only puts the diver in a position to locate obstacles such as underwater ledges (reefs), wrecks, barrels and the like, at a considerable distance but also allows him to determine their position in relation to one another and himself.
Solving problems arising from the protection of the environment, harbour and shipping lane construction and maintenance, location of obstacles and recovery of lost objects for example, is made a lot easier with the aid of the TSO 10.
The System TSO 10
The Diver Sonar is a compact non-corrosive equipment which was developed and optimized in close cooperation with it's potential users, divers.
Sensors, electronics, controls and display are integrated in one common unit. Power is provided by batteries, or accumulators fitted into an easily replaceable battery pack situated on the underside of the unit.
All modes of operation and parameter settings are selectable using two control levers, one at either side of the unit. These levers are easily manipulated, using forefinger and thumbs (even when wearing diving gloves), whilst maintaining full control over the unit.
Under water the unit has a slight buoyancy, so that when released it will return to the surface. Variations in the saline content of the water are compensated for by means of trim weights.
The TSO 10 far outclasses the capabilities of conventional diver sonar units. These transmit only one relatively broad beam, whereas the TSO 10 Diver Sonar covers an angle of 64 degrees by means of 32 (yes Thirty Two) very narrow beams. It is first equipped to offer graphic presentation of the echo signals in such a way as to give the diver a 3D impression of the area under search.
Graphic
presentation has been optimized especially for use under water. In
the active mode, the TSO 10 offers clear presentation of parameter settings
and easy recognition and localization of objects, even under worst conditions.
Additional sensors, integrated gyro, diving depth pressure sensor and an
artificial horizon increase the divers ability to orientate himself and
at the same time efficiently operate the system.
The TSO 10 with its graphic presentation allows the diver to easily interpret the picture and to relate it to the actual surroundings, even under the most difficult conditions e.g. in harbours, where the multitude of underwater objects and structures would render it impossible to operate a conventional diver sonar.
In addition to the active mode, the TSO 10 is provided with an audio channel for the detection of pingers and other sources of sound within the waveband of 1 - 50 kHz.
The TSO 10 is powered by either replaceable batteries or rechargeable NiCd accumulators. The state of charge is constantly indicated on the display.
For special applications, the TSO 10 can, with the aid of two adapter plates and connection cable (available as optional extra), be split into two sections. This version allows the transducer (sonar head) section to be operated remotely from the control and display section enabling for example and underwater search while monitoring the results from the comfort os an escort vessel.
